She couldn't fly. Too bad.
McCall's face appeared before her as she'd last seen himthe emotion she'd run from heavy in his eyesand in a flash of understanding she knew what she'd thrown away.
D.J. landed with a thud on her rear end. "Ouch." She rubbed the bruised area. Even her teeth ached from the impact. But she was alive, unbrokenand sitting on the floor of the tree stand she'd just fallen from.
"Did that hurt?"
D.J. tilted her neck and scowled at Josie, who perched on a tree limb, bare feet swinging.
"Of course it hurt. What do you think?" She continued to rub her injured rear end.
"Good. You needed a little jolt in the right area."
"A kick in the butt, you mean?"
"Exactly." Josie sighed and floated down to sit so close to D.J. their knees bumped. "What are you running from?" the angel asked in a quiet voice just above a whisper. "Why do you continue to fight this gift? A gift that could change your entire life."
D.J. opened her mouth to make a smart retort. Instead her breath came out on a soft sigh of despair. Josie patted her hand. D.J. let her.
"I don't know." D.J.'s voice sounded rusty, as though she hadn't spoken for a very long time. Her chest hurt. Her eyes burned. Delayed reaction from her near death experience, she told herself. But she knew the pain in her chest and the burn in her eyes were unshed tears. She hadn't cried since early childhoodand she didn't plan to start now. D.J.
